• Support staff: WIC clinics provide trained staff, including lactation consultants and peer counselors, to offer one-on-one counseling and guidance. Peer counselors are mothers with personal breastfeeding experience who provide relatable and practical support.
• Equipment and aids: The program provides breastfeeding equipment, such as breast pumps and breast shells, to help mothers meet their lactation goals, especially when returning to work or school.
• Education: Participants receive educational materials, classes, and counseling on topics like establishing milk supply, pumping, milk storage, and how family and friends can support them.
• Hotlines: Some state WIC programs offer 24/7 lactation support hotlines for immediate assistance with questions and concerns.
